What is metabolism
Foundations
- Body is made of chemicals.
- chemical reactions are what powers our body.
Metabolism = 4 parts - Basal Metabolic Rate
- energy that body uses to maintain metabolic processes that keep you alive.
- for most people, BMR uses the most energy.
- Non-exercise activity thermogenesis
- energy that you use for any movements that aren't exercise.
- some people have more adaptive metabolisms and will naturally fidget and move more to burn extra calories when they consume more food.
- Thermic effect of food
- energy you burn just by processing food.
- fat only burns 1-2% of energy when you're eating it versus 20-30% for protein.
- Exercise activity thermogenesis
- the energy you spend when exercising
All of the above makes up your TDEE — total daily energy expenditure aka metabolic rate
More muscle has small effect on metabolic rate. So does eating more protein and whole foods. However, exercise is the most effective way to improve your metabolic rate.
